National League July 29 MLB recap: Austin Riley continues to dominate in July

Austin Riley homered and drove in three runs, Kyle Wright scored his 13th win of the season and the Atlanta Braves beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 on Friday.

Riley hit his 29th homer of the season in the first inning and added one-run doubles in the third and fifth. He has 11 home runs and 24 RBIs with a .427 average in July.

Riley now has 24 more than one base hits since the start of the month. It’s the second-highest single-month total in Braves history. Only Hank Aaron did better with 25 more than one base hits in July 1961.

Wright’s 13 wins (13-4) is a National League high. He allowed two runs in six and two-thirds innings and recorded five strikeouts.

His vis-à-vis Madison Bumgarner (6-10) gave up five runs, including four earned, in six innings.

Marte and Nimmo offer victory to the Mets

Starling Marte homered, tripled and drove in three, Brandon Nimmo broke the eighth-inning tie with a two-run slap, and the New York Mets came from behind twice to take the measure of the Miami Marlins 6-4, Friday night.

Recalled before the game, Laval resident Charles Leblanc was in uniform for the Marlins, but he did not take part in the game.

Nimmo finished the game with three RBIs while Marte was a double away from making a carousel for the leaders of the National’s East Section. The Mets have won their last four meetings and maintained their three-game lead over the Atlanta Braves.

Emergency hitter Eduardo Escobar hit home plate on the Nimmo home run. Reliever Steven Okert (5-1) suffered the setback.

Daniel Vogelbach hit two doubles for the Mets.

Sandy Alcantara completed five innings for the Marlins, which was the shortest night on the job since May 6. He allowed four runs and eight hits _ a career high this season. He walked three and struck out five batters.

After 13 consecutive outings where the right-hander stayed on the mound until at least the seventh inning, he has totaled 11 innings in two starts since the All-Star game break.

Adam Ottavino (5-2) was flawless in the seventh inning and Trevor Williams followed with a clear eighth inning. Edwin Diaz, who got his 23rd save of the season, then struck out the last three batters in the ninth inning.
