Nadal and Kyrgios in the quarterfinals

Dhe 22-time Grand Slam tournament winner Rafael Nadal has confidently reached the quarter-finals in Wimbledon and is still striving for a dream final against Novak Djokovic. The 36-year-old Spanish tennis superstar defeated Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6: 4, 6: 2, 7: 6 (8: 6) on Monday evening. Nadal conceded two breaks in the third set, but remained clarified in the crucial moments. He now meets number eleven seeded US professional Taylor Fritz, who didn’t give Australian qualifier Jason Kubler a chance 6:3, 6:1, 6:4 and hasn’t dropped a set yet.

Nadal still has a shot at his third Grand Slam title of the year. In the final there could be a duel with the top seeded defending champion Novak Djokovic from Serbia.

Kyrgios visibly relieved

The controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios won in another emotional roller coaster ride against the American Brandon Nakashima 4: 6, 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 2), 3: 6, 6: 2. At times, the 27-year-old complained about shoulder problems and, after brilliant moments, also allowed himself weak phases. “I’ll definitely need a glass of wine tonight,” said Kyrgios, visibly relieved about his second quarter-finals in Wimbledon after the premiere in 2014.

His third-round duel won with world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece caused a stir because both players had been warned for offenses and blamed each other afterwards. Kyrgios has been criticized for insulting the referees, but is also very popular with large sections of the audience. Kyrgios is now dealing with Chilean Cristian Garin, who defeated Australian Alex de Minaur in 4:34 hours 2: 6, 5: 7, 7: 6 (7: 3), 6: 4, 7: 6 ( 10:6) prevailed.

In the women’s competition, Romanian Simona Halep reached the quarterfinals for the first time since winning the title in 2019. The 30-year-old dominated 6-1, 6-2 against world number four Paula Badosa from Spain. She meets America’s Amanda Anisimova, who defeated France’s Harmony Tan 6-2, 6-3, ending the surprising run of Serena Williams’s conqueror.
