Missing Covid-19 vaccination: Ten unvaccinated MLB professionals miss the game

  • MLB: 10 unvaccinated players at the Kansas City Royals
  • Andrew Benintendi is on the blacklist
  • Royals will draw on players from Double and Triple A

When the Royals head to Toronto over the weekend to take on the Blue Jays, they’ll be crossing the Canadian border with some unfamiliar faces in the lineup. Ten players will not make the trip to Toronto because they are not vaccinated against COVID-19, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. The group includes several key batsmen and the team’s top two starting pitchers.

Numerous Kansas players are on the banned list

Players who cannot play in Toronto include outfielder Andrew Benintendi, utilityman Whit Merrifield, catcher MJ Melendez, first baseman and outfielder Hunter Dozier, starting pitcher Brad Keller, starting pitcher Brady Singer, center fielder Michael A. Taylor, outfielder Kyle Isbel, relief pitcher Dlyan Coleman and catcher Cam Gallagher.

The group was suspended, resulting in a loss of salary and severance pay for the four games they missed. Benintendi is the team’s only All-Star representative, batting .314/.384/.399 with three homers and 37 RBI in 86 games this season. The 28-year-old will become a free agent this offseason and is a strong contender to be traded before August 2 considering the royals are in last place.

Kansas City will draw on players from Double and Triple A to strengthen the roster. The four-game series with the Blue Jays is scheduled to begin Thursday.
