Kyle Edmund has injury nightmare and returns to competition

Buried in the nebula of memory or completely forgotten. that’s right Kyle Edmund in the minds of many tennis fans, who may not remember that this 27-year-old British player became 14 in the ATP ranking and played a Grand Slam semifinal, such as the 2018 Australian Open, something within the reach of very few . A complete tennis player, versatile, with good adaptation to all surfaces and without holes in his tennis, he encountered a serious injury when he was at a splendid moment in his career. He had added his second professional title in February 2020, in New York, but the pandemic brought even worse news for him. He tells it on atptour.com and Ubitennis, a few days after competing again, at the ATP 500 Washington 2022.

“Since the final stretch of 2020 I felt a sharp and persistent pain in my left knee. I tried to play several tournaments dealing with it, but it was impossible, so I decided to have surgery for the first time in November of that year”, reveals an Edmund who in the US Open 2020 matched Djokovic, in the second round, winning a set. From then on, everything was suffering and more after verifying that the surgical interventions did not solve the problem. In March 2021 he had to undergo surgery again and shortly before Wimbledon 2022 he needed a third intervention, much simpler, to finish cleaning the area.

Edmund returned to the courts at Wimbledon 2022 playing a mixed doubles match

From there, he has been able to train in the last weeks of the tour on grass, getting involved again in the circuit and little by little acquiring the competitive rhythm necessary for the expected return. More than a year and a half without playing is too much for a man whose great virtue has always been his solvency at the bottom of the court. “It’s a complicated injury, it doesn’t heal on its own and I know I’m always going to have to deal with having gone through this ordeal. Now I’m happy because I feel like a tennis player again and I think I have years ahead of me to do important things. I’m going to train very hard to give me the opportunity to be competitive as soon as possible”, declared a Kyle Edmund that will use the figure of the Protected Ranking to return in the ATP 500 Washington 2022.
