Kilian Jornet wins for the fifth time the prestigious Hardrock 100 setting a new record

BarcelonaKilian Jornet told ARA a few weeks ago that he has decided to travel less. In order to catch fewer planes and pollute less, Catalan only travels outside of Europe once a season, now. And this year 2022 it was time to go to the United States to participate in the Hardrock 100, a 100.5 mile (160 km) ultramarathon on a circular route through the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado. The lineup was difficult to improve, as Jornet’s great rival was the other great dominator of ultratrail racing, the Frenchman François D’Haene, champion of the race in 2021.

And both have fought to the end to take the win. Jornet, however, made an effort during the last descent and broke the race with 10 km to go to finish alone, with a time of 21 hours, 36 minutes and 24 seconds. The race, one of the most prestigious on the calendar, saw the start as the American Dakota Jones set the pace. Jones already played a big role in the last Zegama Aizkorri, a race where Kilian Jornet also won. Both the Catalan and D’Haene allowed Jones to go ahead alone, but when he reached 100 km they caught him. The duel between the two favorites was finally decided in the end, when Kilian Jornet was able to defeat D’Haene for the first time in a distance of 100 miles, as until now it was the Frenchman who had taken the victories. In the end, d’Haene lost 15 minutes to the winner.

Kilian Jornet has recently set a new race record, surpassing the 2014 one he had set himself. This is the fifth time that the Catalan has won in Colorado, in this race where it is very difficult to find a place due to its high level and the will to maintain a racing spirit of the previous ones. The race, which crosses an area where mines existed for years, has ended this morning in the United States with a new victory for Jornet.
