Karlsruhe now bottom of the table: KSC’s race to catch up against Magdeburg comes too late

Status: 07/24/2022 3:31 p.m

Karlsruher SC suffered a home defeat against 1. FC Magdeburg in the 2nd Bundesliga – after a 0:3 break, the team turned up the heat too late.

For Magdeburg, the 3:2 (3:0) victory on the 2nd matchday meant the first triple point win of the season, and the FCM jumped into the top half of the table. The KSC is bottom of the table without a point.

Magdeburg dismantled Karlsruhe before the break

Magdeburg was the better team from the start and was already leading in the 7th minute. After a corner from the left, Jason Ceka passed Andreas Müller in the middle, whose shot was deflected from 20 meters and landed in the goal of goalkeeper Kai Eisele. In the meantime, KSC had the chance to equalize: Jerome Gondorf’s potentially decisive pass to Tim Rossmann was blocked by Magdeburg (21st minute).

Then Karlsruhe, which had already lost 5-0 at SC Paderborn on the first matchday, fell apart at times. Baris Atik scored in the 32nd minute with little resistance to make it 2-0 for Magdeburg, in the 34th minute Moritz Kwarteng followed up: Karlsruhe’s Daniel Gordon played his goalkeeper Eisele halfway up, who missed the pass – Kwarteng completed the 3-point lead at the break: 0 for Magdeburg.

Catch-up comes too late

But Karlsruhe got back into the game: Simone Rapp failed because of Magdeburg’s goalkeeper Dominik Reimann. But then Marvin Wanitzek scored with a shot from 20 meters (63rd), Mikkel Kaufmann completed a counterattack to make it 2:3 (65th) – after the disastrous first half, KSC was suddenly only missing a goal.

But the race to catch up was unsuccessful. Magdeburg calmed down again and brought the lead over time. Coach Christian Titz was not quite satisfied: “It’s important for my team to have the confidence to know that they can win a game here too. However, we gave the game away unnecessarily. When we came out of the break, we were very imprecise in passing, made unnecessary mistakes and were lucky that our goalkeeper thwarted chances.
