Joshua Cavallo worries about his safety if he were to travel to Qatar for the World Cup

In 2021, he became the first openly gay player in men’s professional football.

Joshua Cavallo, the first openly gay active player, returned to his desire to participate in the next World Cup in Qatar. But the Adelaide United left-back is also worried about his safety in a country where gay rights are severely restricted.

“If I represent Australia at the World Cup it would be an honour, but at the same time the laws clash. It has always been my dream to play for my country at the World Cup, but does I want my life to be in danger? It’s difficult and a bit sad. It’s hard to choose what you prefer,” the 22-year-old said in an interview with Sky Sports News.
