Shooting guard Javier Mojica was removed from the National Team by protocol of COVID-19 and will be replaced by the canastero of Puerto Rican roots Stephen Thompson Jr. for tomorrow’s game, Monday, against Mexico in the third qualifying window for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
The substitution was reported by the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation (Fbpur) in a press release. The athlete, who plays for the Bayamón Cowboys in the National Superior Basketball (BSN), will remain under symptom monitoring by the national team’s medical staff.
“We have activated the relevant protocols designed by the FBPUR medical team together with FIBA and the player has been isolated with the attention he requires. The rest of the team is available. We will continue to pay attention to the well-being and health of our players and staff,” said Dr. Luis Molinary in written statements.
Tomorrow’s game will be at 8:00 pm at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan.
Puerto Rico, which is assured of going to the second round, has a 2-3 record in Group D. The United States, which beat the Puerto Rican team on Friday, has a 4-1 record and Mexico 3-1.
