It’s 20! Venezuela bathed in gold in archery

Mayra Méndez and Ricardo Vásquez combined to beat the Colombian duo, made up of Jorge Enríquez and Ana Rendon, in the final 6-4.

The criollos took the national tricolor to the top of the podium that Guatemala completed with shooters Nancy Enriquez and Gabriel Bermudez.

“Those great shots did not come by themselves, I had the help of my coach Elias who was always aware of my progress during the pandemic, I owe this result to him,” Mendez said after securing his first gold medal.

The Mixed Recurve event brought together pairs from nine countries: Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru, the Dominican Republic, the host Colombia and Venezuela.

Mayra and Ricardo started with a solid 6-2 victory in the quarterfinals against the Dominican Republic. And later they beat Chile in a close duel 5-4 to enter their name in the final, in which they ended up beating the locals.

The conquest of the fencers is the seventh gold medal that Venezuela has achieved in pairs or team events. Before they did it in:

  • Judo
  • male sword
  • female sword
  • Rowing (in doubles and in 4×1000 relay)
