Inclusive Spanish Basketball Championship

Valencia will, for the first time, host the Spanish Basketball Championship of the Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Intellectual Disabilities (FEDDI). The event, which will take place between October 28 and 31, was presented today at a press conference at the Municipal Sports Foundation (FDM) of Valencia.

The act has had the intervention of the Councilor for Sports of the Valencia City Council and president of the Municipal Sports Foundation, Pilar Bernabé; the president of FEDI CV, Antonio Esteban; the vice president of FEDI CV, Joaquim Gisbert; and the general secretary of FEDDI Spain, Miguel Ángel Sánchez.

The Councilor for Sports, Pilar Bernabé, has stressed “the importance of supporting inclusive sport” and praised “the effort and overcoming” of athletes with disabilities. “If we are all capable of joining forces to make inclusive sport visible, which makes all people equal, we will have achieved the greatest success”, he stated.

More than 200 players and players

The FEDDI Spanish Basketball Championship will feature the participation of 24 clubs from various parts of Spain. In total, about 240 players with functional and intellectual diversity, who will compete in both the male and female categories.

The important days of the tournament, which will take place in l’Alqueria del Basket (Calle del Bomber Ramon Duart), will be Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th, days that will include the matches of the three categories in which it is played: Competition –sport without modification–, Adapted –with adaptation of the regulation– and Sports Skills –aimed at athletes who have a very low level of motor skills–.

The event will allow public attendance, according to current regulations, and will also include entertainment activities. Thus, at the closing, the batukada Tymbals, made up of people with functional and intellectual diversity, and the singer Óscar de Jesús will be in charge of livening up the atmosphere. On the other hand, the trophies are made by people with disabilities from the Fet de Vidre Special Employment Center.

Support for inclusive sport

The Municipal Sports Foundation works together with the various federations of athletes with disabilities to make adapted and inclusive sport visible and ensure that all people can practice physical activity and sports without distinction of any kind.

For this reason, since 2020, the Sports Schools program includes an offer of multi-sport activities aimed at people with intellectual disabilities, in collaboration with FEDI CV.

This project seeks to reach the maximum number of athletes possible, with the aim of making sport known among people with intellectual disabilities. In this way, sport fulfills the essential mission of becoming an element of social, educational and recreational integration while adapting to the specific needs of any group.
