Hertha star Marco Richter (23) was diagnosed with a tumor on his testicles – Dr. Tobias Jäger, specialist in urology in Essen, answers the most important questions.
What does the diagnosis mean?
Jäger: “This means that it is a malignant tumor that has to be surgically removed.”
How do you know the tumor is malignant?
Jäger: “Testicular tumors are almost always malignant. But there is also an extremely large chance of healing. The testicles are removed, the operation takes a good 20 to 25 minutes, after about four weeks the athlete can ideally be back on the pitch.”
What is the worse case?
Jäger: “If not only the testicles are affected, but there are also metastases in the lymph nodes, then the intervention is more difficult. Then chemotherapy is required afterwards and the healing process takes a few months.”
Does Marco Richter have testicular cancer?
Jäger: “You can’t say that in general. Cancer refers to malignant tumors. But you only have final certainty when the pathologist has examined the tissue.”
What precautionary measures are there for young men?
Jäger: “Scanning is best, there are also some sketches on the internet. It works best in the shower with everything hanging down. If it feels like the heel of a hand, then everything is ok. However, if it feels like a knuckle, then you should see a urologist.”
Your tip for all men?
Jäger: “Check yourself every four weeks or go to the urologist early, nobody will be sent away. Men should follow the example of women. Three out of four women regularly go to check-ups. For men, only one in four goes.”
