Girona is negotiating the arrival of former Espanyol captain David López

Yesterday in Getafe, they were waiting for David López to sign a contract for two seasons plus an optional one. The agreement between the ex-captain of Espanyol, free since June 30, and the Madrid team was a fact and was only pending initialing with the signature. However, at the last minute an offer from Girona would have made David López change his plans. The team from Girona, which had already submitted a first offer, would have matched Getafe’s proposal and the player from Sant Cugat del Vallès would see very favorably the possibility of continuing to play in Primera close to home. So much so that he would have backed down and rejected Getafe’s offer, with whom he had agreed everything, to give Girona a yes. López, 32 years old, is therefore shaping up to be one of Girona’s additions and would be added to those already confirmed by Míchel de Valentín Castellanos (New York City) and Yan Couto (Manchester City).

With the more than likely arrival of David López, Míchel will see the axis of the defense strengthened with an experienced player forged in a thousand battles, who, in addition, can act as a defensive pivot, a natural position that he has been losing over time . López lost prominence last season with Espanyol, with whom he played 18 games, of which only 8 started and one full. However, the Valaisian had always been indisputable at Cornellà, both at the center of the defense and in midfield, with 37, 43, 24, 36 and 38 games played from the 2016-17 season to the penultimate one. In total, David López accumulated 181 games in the First Division and 75 in the Second Division, in addition to 57 in the Italian Serie A with whom he played for two seasons (2014-16) with Napoli before returning to Espanyol. Before consolidating in the white-and-blue first team, the one from Sant Cugat experienced two cessions to Leganés in the former Segona B (11-12) and to Huesca, in Segona (12-13).

Physical (1’85 m. and 80 kg.), tactically intelligent and with a good kick off the ball, David López will be 33 years old in October. The club believes that he must be a very useful player to strengthen both the midfield and a rearguard where Míchel only has Santi Bueno, Juanpe and a Bernardo Espinosa with a badly bruised knee. In addition, the fact that he was free of a contract has facilitated an operation that seems to be on the verge of closing. It will be necessary to see if the terms of the contract, in terms of years, are the same as those established with Getafe (2+1).
