Joshua Obiesie was happy about his signing and said: “I’m really looking forward to Frankfurt, the team and the fans. I talked to Coach Hammink a lot beforehand and I’m looking forward to working with you. I want to take the next step in my development and help the team achieve our goals. With my move to the basket and my throw, I want to help us in terms of scoring and at the same time use my strengths to create for my teammates.”

Geert Hammink, head coach of the Fraport Skyliners, said: “Joshua is a great guard who can play both guard positions. His talent and athleticism are unquestionable. He will play more for us than in the past, his decisions will then be important. I’m looking forward to working together and I think that not just me, but together as a team we can help him improve. Of course he will also help us to improve the team.”

There is more from head coach Geert Hammink about Joshua, but also about his trip to the NBA Summer League, in the current episode of the FRAPORT SKYLINERS podcast

Yannick Binas, Managing Director of the Fraport Skyliners, was also optimistic: “We are very happy to include Joshua in our team as an important building block in the German positions. We have been watching his career with interest for a long time. Now was exactly the right time to find each other, not least because of Len Schoormann’s loan. Especially since Joshua’s position and abilities fit our current requirement profile perfectly. With a lot of playing time and intensive work with our coaching team around Geert Hammink and Klaus Perwas, he can give our game new facets and take important next steps in his professional career.

Already experienced a lot at the age of 22

Joshua received national attention in 2019 when he entered the NBA draft. After good workouts with the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks or Atlanta Hawks, among others, the point guard was not considered in the election.

The 2019 NBBL MVP (22.5 pts, 6.4 ace, 6.0 reb) earned the honor of even being selected seriously with a very good transition from youth basketball at IBAM Munich to the professionals from Würzburg in the easyCredit BBL.

In the 2018/19 season he completed his first professional season in the dress of Würzburg and promptly came up with 5.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in twelve appearances. All in all, the native of Munich played for Würzburg for three years before moving to his hometown for Bayern Munich last season.

In Munich he then averaged 2.8 points in just under eight minutes of action in 18 main rounds. The good long-range shooter delivered one of his best games against his new club. Against Frankfurt he scored seven points and grabbed ten rebounds (career best) in the second leg of last season.

Also seen a lot internationally

In the dress of the German youth national teams, Obiesie belonged to one of the most successful generations. With the U18 he won the renowned Albert Schweizer tournament in 2018, with the U20 he won bronze at the 2019 European Championships and in 2020 he was nominated for the first time in the extended squad of the national team in seniors.

With Würzburg, Joshua played seven games in the FIBA Europe Cup and scored 8.6 points in 17.3 minutes with strong shot odds (50% twos, 40.9% threes).

He received special honors in 2018 when he was one of four Europeans invited by the NBA players’ union to the NBPA Top100 Camp. Obiesie was also present at the renowned Hoop Summit and was part of the Sacramento Kings Summer League squad.
