France considers banning night sports competitions this winter

The European Union announced this Tuesday an agreement of the Twenty-seven for the 15% reduction in gas consumption due to the problems caused by the War in Ukraine. It seems that citizens are going to have to make an effort this winter, and sport is not going to be less. In France, the measure of ban sport at night during winter to save on energy consumption.

This was confirmed this Tuesday on FranceInfo by the French Sports Minister, Amelie Oudea-Castera, who acknowledged that the ban on night competitions starting this winter “is one of the open options.” He is preparing a “plan for adapting sport to climate change” with the Minister for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, Christophe Béchu, “by the end of the year”, which still has to be approved by the Government.

“When we see the heat waves that we have experienced, [necesitamos] a well-harmonized doctrine throughout the territory in a logic of safety for the participants”, both for amateur and professional sports, explained Amélie Oudéa-Castéra. The Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, asked on Tuesday «exemplariness» in particular to the ministries in matters of energy saving.

His ministry, which is currently working on a “climate change adaptation plan for sport”, could therefore change practices that have been commonly accepted until now, especially in football and rugby. At the moment no decision has been made, but “we want sport to be at the center of this desire to accompany the ecological transition,” said the minister.

Without a doubt, the measure would completely revolutionize competitions, since in sports such as football it is very common for many of the matches to be played at night or, at least, without natural light. No decision has been made yet, but it is a real chance which is being debated in France.
