First medals with an Ibizan accent

Pitiusan archery continues to show that it is at a very high level. The island expedition won five team medals this Thursday, all of them in the recurve bow modality, on the first day of the Spanish Outdoor Championship, which is held until Sunday in Madrid. One of them was gold; two, of silver, and as many others, of bronze.

The Balearic U-18 team was proclaimed champion of Spain. This team was made up of Toni Roig and Guillermo García-Carpintero from Ibiza, as well as Lluc Santiago from Menorca. The islanders, seeded number one and exempt from a rival in the quarterfinals, made all the forecasts good and left Asturias (Diego Conde, Marcos García and Jonay Pereira) in the gutter by a resounding 6-0, in the semifinals, already Madrid (Guillermo Díaz, Víctor Tesfaye Niño and Víctor Zaurin) 6-2, in the final.

In the men’s sub-15 category, the Balearic Islands won the silver medal. The team made up of Eduardo Santolaria, Marc Roig and Yeray Barrera from Ibiza beat Catalonia 6-0 (Arnau Borrull, Daniel Espes and Pep Rosell), in the semis, and fell 5-1 against Andalusia (Antonio Domínguez, Pablo Ramírez and Hugo Vico), in the battle for the title. It should be noted that the aforementioned Pitiusan goalkeepers set the national record for the category in this competition with a total of 1,947 points.

In the women’s sub-15 category, the Balearic team, made up of Gisela Torres and Israe Allouch from Ibiza, as well as Iria Vanrell from Menorca, started as number two seed and became runner-up after losing in the final by 0 -6 against the number one, the Andalusians Marta Aznar, Carmen Palomo and Leticia Romero. To reach the last round, the islanders, without a rival in the quarterfinals, had eliminated Madrid (Amaya González, Judit Jiménez and María Mondéjar) 5-3 in the semifinals.

In the women’s sub-18 category, the Balearic team won the bronze medal. The team made up of Paula Hidalgo, Pilar Pascual and Marina Roig beat Catalonia (Emma Serra, Lucía Ramos and Izaskun García) 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the islanders fell against Madrid (Irati Unamunzaga, Carlota García Navas and Iria de la Fuente), seeded number one, by 0-6. Then it was time to play for third place against Asturias (Paula Álvarez, Andrea Daniela González and Alba Ramos) and the Balearic Islands were more accurate in that battle to climb to the third place on the podium thanks to a 5-3 result.

The other medal won by the Balearic Islands fell in the women’s sub-21 category. As there were only three teams in contention, the positions were resolved by individual scores. The Balearic team, made up of Niura Barakhova and Carla Santamaría from Formentera, both from S’Arc d’Eivissa, as well as Clara Cervantes from Menorca, won the bronze medal.
