At a press conference, Michael Ballack (45) sees Julian Nagelsmann (35) before his second season Bayern-Coaches under pressure.
The ex-national player and current DAZN expert: “If you look at the commitments, it’s interesting – and Julian Nagelsmann will be measured by that – whether he finds the best possible system with the team and the quality.”
It’s all about the Champions League. Ballack’s warning: “FC Bayern will have to listen carefully to the coach/team structure over the next two or three years in order to get the best out of it.”
Last season there was an embarrassing quarter-final defeat against Villarreal (0:1, 1:1) in the premier class. So that this doesn’t happen again, the record champions have hit the transfer market and spent a lot of money: Matthijs de Ligt (22) comes from Juventus for 67 million euros (plus 10 million bonuses), Sadio Mané (30) for 32 million euros (plus 9 million bonuses) from Liverpool FC. There is also Mathys Tel (17) from Stade Rennes, who costs 20 million euros (plus 8.5 million bonuses). In addition, two professionals from Ajax Amsterdam: Ryan Gravenberch (20/18.5 million euros plus 5.5 million bonuses) and free transfer right-back Noussair Mazraoui (24).
Ballack interprets the new signings in such a way that Nagelsmann does not permanently convert the defensive line into a back three: “If I look at the transfers this summer, it already indicates that I want to be successful again with the back four.” Nagelsmann also had a back three in preparation (in the 3-5-2 system).

Wagner: “If a coach wants to play like that and the club thinks it’s okay in terms of philosophy, it’s understandable that you don’t have a classic nine as a regular player in the squad.”
However, one will only see at the end of the season, in March, April, May 2023, whether this will bring success. Then all competitions are about the titles: “Then Liverpool is pressing you, that’s something else.” A classic nine helps to free yourself from pressure situations.

Wagner: “I’m a bit skeptical. But of course I wouldn’t rule out that it might work – especially with these attacking players and with this coach.”
One thing is clear: Nagelsmann is not solely responsible for putting together the squad. Board boss Oliver Kahn (53) moved away from his Basta announcement in the Lewandowski case. And sports director Hasan Salihamidzic (45) decided not to get a 1-1 replacement for Lewandowski.
