Ex-American football star Hope Solo given two-year suspended prison sentence

She will not go behind bars. Former American soccer star Hope Solo received a two-year suspended prison sentence on Monday for drunk driving. The ex-goalkeeper, who has more than 200 selections with her national team, was arrested on March 31 after being found drunk and unconscious at the wheel of her parked car, engine running, in a parking lot in North Carolina. Her two-year-old twins were in the back of the vehicle.

Hope Solo was also being prosecuted for resisting police during her arrest as well as for child abuse, but both charges were dropped according to her lawyer Chris Clifton, quoted by the Winston Salem Journal. She was also sentenced to thirty days in prison, but the judge granted her a “credit” of thirty days because of her treatment in a specialized establishment. She will also have to pay a fine of 2,500 dollars (about 2,450 euros) and 600 dollars (about 587 euros) to pay the costs of the laboratory tests carried out on her.

“I am proud of motherhood and what my husband and I have done day in and day out for over two years, throughout the pandemic, with our twins. Although I am proud of us, it was incredibly difficult and I made a huge mistake, the former player reacted on Twitter after her sentencing. Easily the worst of my life. I underestimated how destructive part of my life alcohol had become. The advantage of making such a big mistake is that you learn from it quickly. It was difficult and sometimes very painful. »

Hope Solo also thanked her husband, her mother, her lawyers, her fans and her care center in her message posted on the social network. She was to join the “Hall of fame”, which distinguishes the best players in the history of this sport in the United States in April, but had asked to postpone her induction to 2023 to allow time to treat her alcohol problems. .
