This year, Mertens had reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the round of 16 at Roland-Garros with the Russian Veronika Kudermetova.
Shuai Zhang won the US Open in women’s doubles last year and the Australian Open in 2019, both times with Australian Samantha Stosur.
