Elise Mertens beaten in the women’s doubles final


Associated this time with the Chinese Shuai Zhang, 33, 4th in the world in doubles, Elise Mertens could not retain her doubles title at the British Open on the London lawn at Wimbledon on Sunday.

Elise Mertens and Shuai Zhang (N.1) were indeed dominated in the final by the second seeded pair formed by the Czechs Barbora Krejcikova (WTA 7), 26, and Katerina Siniakova (WTA 3), also 26, 6-2, 6-4 in 66 minutes of play.

The Czech duo now have five Grand Slams to their name after winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2018, Roland Garros a second time last year and the Australian Open last January.

The Limburger has two other Grand Slam doubles titles to her name with the US Open in 2019 and the Australian Open last year, with Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka. This year, Mertens had reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the round of 16 at Roland-Garros with the Russian Veronika Kudermetova.

Shuai Zhang won the US Open in women’s doubles last year and the Australian Open in 2019, both times with Australian Samantha Stosur.
