Djokovic wins Wimbledon but loses positions in the standings

Win Wimbledon for the seventh time in his career – 21st career Grand Slam – and record the worst ranking in four years. It is the paradox of Novak Djokovic in light of the ATP’s decision not to award points for the London Slam after the exclusion of Russians and Belarusians by the organizers. The Serbian could not defend, ranking in hand, the 2000 points of the victory of 2021 despite being able to confirm himself on the field by beating Kyrgios and thus slipped to seventh place: it is his worst placing from the tenth position occupied on 13 August 2018.

Sinner new blue number one

Pay the bill too Matteo Berrettini, which in any case – due to Covid – was unable to defend the points of the final won a year ago: the Roman is now 15th. The new blue number one is like that Jannik Sinner, beaten by Djokovic in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and back in the Top Ten for the first time since March: the young South Tyrolean climbs three positions and is tenth. The Russian remains at the top of the table Daniil Medvedev ahead of the German Alexander Zverev, Rafa Nadal – who retired in London before the semifinal – returns to the podium ahead of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz. Behind Djokovic are Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime. As for the other Italians, nine steps behind for Lorenzo Sonego (63rd), just ahead of Fabio Fognini, Lorenzo Musetti gains three places and 67th.

Federer leaves the rankings

There is no more in the standings Roger Federer. The former Swiss champion of the world – 41 years old in August -, who played his last match at Wimbledon on 7 July a year ago when he came out in the quarterfinals against Hurkacz, has lost all the points accumulated and for the first time since 21 September 1997 he is not present in the ATP ranking. Federer, struggling with a difficult recovery after a series of knee operations, announced precisely at Wimbledon – on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Centrale – that he would return to playing the Grand Slam on grass. At the moment his return to the field is expected at Laver Cup scheduled in London from 23 to 25 September.

This is the new ATP ranking: 1. Daniel Medvedev (Russia) 7,775 2. Alexander Zverev (Ger) 6,850 3. Rafael Nadal (Spain) 6,165 (+1) 4. Stefanos Tsitsipas (Gre) 5,150 (+1) 5.
