“Bullshit !” : Rafael Nadal gets carried away after a question about his marriage to Xisca Perello

Rafael Nadal has been facing his opponents at Wimbeldon since Monday, June 27. On this occasion, the British tabloid Express recalled a tense exchange that took place in 2019 between the tennis player and a journalist who asked him if his lack of concentration was due to his marriage to Xisca Perello.

The tournament of Wimbeldon began this Monday, June 27 and Rafael Nadal has already won his first victory against Francisco Cerundolo on the London lawn, despite his Müller-Weiss syndrome, from which he suffers since he was 18. Hours before the sportsman faces Ričardas Berankis, the British tabloid Express recalled this Thursday, June 30 that the Spaniard had had a clash with a journalist in 2019, following a question from him about his marriage to Xisca Perello. At that time, the tennis player had just lose the ATP Tour final against Alexander Zverev. “Tonight you played very short, had started the journalist. I don’t know why, because you’re not used to it. For many people, getting married is a distraction. I would like to know if this marriage has altered your concentration for tennis, even if you have been with the same girl for many yearshe continued.

This question arose on November 11, 2019, i.e. less than a month after Rafael Nadal passed the ring on the finger from Xisca Perello to Mallorca, after fourteen years of relationship. Disconcerted by such a question, the king of the clay court had answered curtly: “Are you really asking me that? Is this a serious question or is it a joke? You are serious ?” After sarcastically asking the journalist how long he had spent with his wife, the sportsman finally decided to end the interview: “Okay. We’re switching to the Spaniard because it’s bullshit here. Thanks a lot.”

A happy marriage and an expected first child

This small indiscretion, however, had not tainted the happiness of Rafael Nadal at that time. The tennis player told the magazine Paris Match a little earlier in the month of June that he was mostly married to the young woman of 33 years “to have a big party” : “Basically, it didn’t change much in our lives since we have been together for seventeen yearshe pointed out, before adding: “But there had come a time in our lives when it seemed like the right timing to do it.”

As if to echo the journalist’s question three years laterthe record holder of Grand Slam titles also told the magazine how much having a stable relationship is important in its success : “In sport, and in tennis more specifically, you have to stay focused every day of your life. If you’re not emotionally stable, it gets more complicated.Final touch to perfect this beautiful picture: the 36-year-old Mallorcan and his wife are expecting their first child, according to information from the newspaper Hola, published on June 15. A happy news that comes just after Rafael Nadal has won his fourteenth title at Roland-Garros. Like what, private life events can also give wings on a court…
