“Being a normal guy to me my life has gone well”

TarragonaMiquel Salvó (1994) is not a player like the others. His evolution, step by step, has brought him from CB Samà, a basketball club in Vilanova i la Geltrú, to the Spanish national team. He combines the work of a professional athlete with teaching studies and puts humility on an equal footing with talent. Inside the track is very good. Outside, exceptional.

What does summer tell you?

– When I started playing basketball I took advantage of the summer to take some of the things that didn’t go well for me and improve it. I tried not to touch the ball for a week or two and then pointed to different campuses or technifications. It’s an ideal time to improve what’s wrong with you. I was left closed and trying to use my right hand.

He has gone through all the categories until he reached the elite.

– There is no secret formula. I’ve done an atypical process, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I’ve never had envy and I’ve always worked hard. Being a normal guy to me life has gone well for me. I have never given up on my way of being and tried not to change. Being humble is almost as important as having talent. To me a lot of people ran their hand over my face, but I never gave up. I wasn’t aware of what I was doing until I got to the Endesa League and I realized that I had been rising year after year. He had normalized it a lot. People remind me of that, but I value it. I always go season to season and try not to think about the long term future. I’ve always taken things very normally. We all want to play in the ACB, but the road doesn’t end there. I don’t want to settle down and work harder than ever to support myself, which is the hardest part.

He moved from Barça’s youth squad to return to his hometown team.

– Playing for Barça was an incredible pride and more like a child. It was a very beautiful few years that helped me to improve and grow as a person, but I had to leave because I wasn’t participating much and I prioritized enjoying basketball again. I always take the positive side of things and I didn’t sink. I’m happy with the way it’s been done.

What does basketball mean to you?

Basketball is very important to me. It’s my job, but life is also other things, like family or friends. I try to have other challenges. Now, for example, I study teaching. When I finish my career as a player, I see myself more as a teacher than as a coach.

What is your assessment of your last participation with the Spanish team?

– I felt really good. The fact that the Spanish team calls you is always a pride because you represent a lot of people. There are no colors. I always go there with a lot of desire and contentment because it means that the work you are doing with your team is going well. I try to get my head around it at every call. In the last window I played one of three games. I try to contribute my grain of sand, knowing that three or four players are left out of the call.

Do you dream of Eurobasketball?

– I have to be realistic. I hope I get the call to play Eurobasket, but if I haven’t participated much in the windows it will be very difficult. I have my feet on the ground and I have to keep working like I have done so far. It’s about taking small steps to become an ever better player.

What do you think of Lorenzo Brown’s nationalization?

– Many selections do the same. When he arrives, he will be one more of us. Those who had to speak, who are the captains of the team, have already spoken. Everyone has their opinion, but we will all go to death with him.

What do you expect from next season with Gran Canaria?

– Take it one step further. I am very comfortable in Gran Canaria and I want to participate a little more. I want to help the team play better than we did. The key is to improve small details, both individually and collectively. I haven’t spoken to Jaka Lakovic, the new coach, yet. He plays very happy basketball. Last season I suffered in the Eurocup because we played against Ulm, which was a team that played very well. All the players were involved in the rotation and I saw a very tidy and very solid opponent. Having a little order will do us good because at some point in the season it has been one of our weaknesses.
