Bayern star Mané “African Footballer of the Year”

Bayern Munich’s new star striker Sadio Mané has been voted “African Footballer of the Year” for the second time. The 30-year-old Senegalese prevailed against his former Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah (Egypt) and his national team-mate Edouard Mendy (Chelsea) at a gala in Morocco’s capital Rabat on Thursday.

Mané led Senegal to the Africa Cup of Nations title in the final against Egypt in February. He was voted Africa’s Footballer of the Year in 2019. “I am very honored to receive this award. I dedicate this trophy to the youth of my homeland,” said Mané, who is revered as a national hero in his homeland.

“We are very happy about Sadio #Mané’s award. In its long history, @FCBayern has never had an African Footballer of the Year in its ranks, that’s a special honor for our club,” tweeted Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn.

Mané flew to Morocco after Bayern Munich’s 6-2 win in a friendly in Washington, where he was one of the goalscorers. Mané did not fly back to the USA, where Bayern’s US tour will see a test against Manchester City on Saturday. Mané only meets his teammates again in Munich. If he had flown back, that would have meant more than 18,000 kilometers of flight in a short time.
