Basketball, nature and technological disconnection in La Vera

Non-contact boxing, ballroom dancing, percussion classes, introduction to yoga, motivational talks, video scouting, visits to natural and heritage sites… And in between, basketball. Lots of basketball.

The traditional summer camps organized by the coach and television analyst Piti Hurtado, which this year have reached their tenth edition, say goodbye until next year after two frenetic weeks in the towns of Jaraíz de la Vera and Jarandilla. Two shifts through which a total of almost 300 young people have come from different parts of the national geography. «We are very happy and satisfied for having been able to bring basketball to La Vera during all these summers. This is not the campus of one person, but of many coaches and monitors. With the help of the two city councils we have put a little basketball in an area that is very visitable for many things and now also for this reason, “explains TO HOY Piti Hurtado, architect of some summer meetings that have an excellent reputation in the basket world.

On this occasion, renowned basketball players such as Lucila Pascua and Berni Rodríguez have been the sponsors of some campuses in which the participants have been able to share moments of learning in certain fields related to basketball. «It is a place where they know that they work seriously and where coexistence is something very important. The absence of mobile phones is essential for everything to flow much faster in order to make the most of time.

Piti Hurtado explains that at certain times, especially during the week of the first shift in Jaraíz de la Vera, they had to reinvent themselves to deal with the heat wave: “It was not easy because it is something that affects us all and the forces are not the same. We had to shorten some activities so that the basketball program would not be affected. These are circumstances that you have to know how to deal with.”

After receiving hundreds of players of training age for 10 editions, Piti Hurtado acknowledges that the teams are doing a good job with the academies, but he misses more opportunities for national players: «Tactically and technically, the evolution is good in the quarries, but now what we lack is that the sports directors have enough security to look towards the national product. Players who cost little and who perform quickly are widely sought out. I think you have to have a little more consideration ». In this regard, Piti Hurtado gives Baba Miller as an example, who in 2017 participated in the Jaraíz de la Vera campus and this past season made his debut in the Euroleague with Real Madrid to later go to the United States university league.

Regarding his professional situation, Piti Hurtado explains that he will continue on the DAZN platform as a commentator for Euroleague matches. However, he is open to listening to offers to return to the bench: «I always have my suitcase at the door because my life is training. Surely I will have more opportunities abroad than in Spain, but I am ready.
