Baseball – Wiener Neustadt Ducks would like to peck

Somehow the last baseball weekend was already puzzling. “I don’t know why the Wanderers are currently winning all the tight games,” mused Ducks official Martin Zoufal: “They’re not doing anything spectacular, they’re actually just playing rock solid, but that’s enough.”

The Diving Ducks celebrated at least one respectable success against the superior leader of the East Division on Thursday, inflicting only the second defeat of the season on the Viennese at 8:7. In games two and three of the mini-series, however, Wanderers showed why they are currently the best team in the league (2-1, 13-3). “In principle, it was two and a half games long at eye level,” analyzes Zoufal.

The defeats are not a broken leg at this point. “Everyone is fighting with personal problems. We still haven’t played with the full squad this season.” In terms of the table, however, every mistake hurts at the moment.

The Metrostars are number one in the regular season. Dornbirn and Attnang-Puchheim currently rank ahead of the Ducks, who are fourth, in the overall table. “We are playing the play-offs in pick mode this year. So the top three can choose their opponents,” explains Zoufal.

The fourth must take what is left. The Ducks have the chance to break into the top three in a triple pack against Traiskirchen (Friday, 7 p.m. in Wiener Neustadt; Saturday and Sunday in Traiskirchen). “A lot will depend on what form Tobias Kiefer is in. When he’s top they’re hard to beat. If he’s mediocre, it’s a lot easier. But I don’t expect either team to win the series 3-0,” said Zoufal.
