Alexandra Ndolo surprisingly gets epee silver

Alexandra Ndolo missed sensational gold with the sword at the Fencing World Championships in Cairo, but achieved the best result by a German woman since 2014 with silver. The 35-year-old from Bonn lost 10:11 to Se-ra Song from South Korea in the thrilling final. Ndolo was the first German woman to win a silver medal at the World Championships in Kazan since Britta Heidemann eight years ago.

After the regular time it was 10:10. In the extra minute, the South Korean had the better end and scored the decisive goal eleven seconds before the end.

For the German Fechter-Bund (DFeB) it would have been the first individual gold since Peter Joppich in Paris twelve years ago, for women the first since Heidemann 2007. For Ndolo it is the first World Cup medal of her long career. In 2017 she won silver at the European Championships in Georgia, two years later bronze at the European Championships in Düsseldorf.
