A retired civil guard ran over Alejandro Valverde and fled

BarcelonaAlejandro Valverde trained on Saturday in Murcia accompanied by his usual group of cyclists. At 12.20 noon, when passing by the RM-560 road, around the town of Javalí Viejo, a car overtook them without respecting the meter and a half distance, at high speed. The group raised their voices against the driver, who braked the vehicle dry. And, in retaliation, he decided to back down. That’s how he collided with Valverde and two other teammates, who were lying on the ground. Immediately afterwards, the vehicle started up again and fled without anyone helping.

This is the reconstruction of the accident suffered by the group of cyclists led by Alejandro Valverde on Saturday, Efe details in a teletype. But the agency, which has contacted police investigators and the driver’s lawyer, can go further: the person responsible for the collision was a retired Civil Guard. He is 69 years old and was assigned to the Basque Country for a few years, in addition to working as an assistant at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Murcia.

The man, whose name has not been disclosed, initially fled but was later handed over to police. On Saturday he spent the night in the dungeon, before going to court. Finally, on Monday, he was released on charges, after testifying. “When he has strength he will give his version, but now it is early because he is assimilating what has happened to him. He has been detained for 45 hours, he is a man who takes cancer medication and suffers some attacks,” said his lawyer, Ariane Santiago .

The Civil Guard insists the collision was unintentional

The group of cyclists denounced the events as a collision that they considered totally intentional. Instead, the retired civil guard denies that he wanted to hurt anyone and describes it only as an accident. For now, the head of the court of instruction number 3 of Murcia has imposed the obligation to appear on the 1st and 15th of each month and ordered that his driver’s license be revoked, in addition to intervening the vehicle that he was driving. The magistrate sees “indications of a possible crime against road safety, injuries and abandonment of the scene of the accident.”

Valverde, a cyclist on the Movistar team, became dizzy and was taken to hospital. The 42-year-old cyclist was not seriously injured and was discharged that same Saturday. He was also joined by a teammate, Pedro Moya, who was also discharged on Saturday evening.
