Wimbledon comeback: That’s why Serena Williams can be expected at the Grand Slam tournament in London – Àlex Corretja exclusively

“So she will be super dangerous, no matter who she plays in which round,” Corretja emphasized.

The American is currently playing in doubles with Ons Jabeur at the preparatory tournament in Eastbourne. The duo won their opening match against Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic and Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain.

Corretja can understand Williams’ choice to start in doubles first. “It means she wants to get in a little bit of shape, a little bit of rhythm, a little bit of tournament spirit,” he said Eurosport-Expert.

Even with doubles, “you have to go out on the pitch and be focused. You step onto the pitch, then you train and play a few matches. That’s how you get back into the rhythm.”

Corretja expects Williams in Wimbledon

However, it is difficult “to predict whether she is ready or not. We have to wait a little longer, a few games. It also depends on the draw.” Since Williams can only start at Wimbledon thanks to a wildcard, she can meet any player in the first round – including number one Iga Swiatek.

According to Corretja, the 23-time Grand Slam winner still has an advantage: “For the first time in so many years, she will not feel any pressure at all. She can just go out and say: ‘Okay, whatever happens, it will be fine be, it will be a gift.’ I know she’s a champion and I’m sure when she goes into a tournament she wants to win. I don’t think she goes there just to see what happens.”

Therefore, Williams is to be expected even after a year’s break. “You shouldn’t be surprised when she’s playing a great tournament. Above all, there aren’t that many grass specialists and I think she can be a very dangerous opponent for anyone she meets,” emphasized the 48-year-old.
