For the first time in history, the two UPAEP basketball teams managed, in the same edition, to be crowned champions of the National Universiade, which was held in Ciudad Juárez Chih.

Before the media, both teams presented the medals and trophies that accredit them as national monarchs.

“A process that began before the pandemic is culminating; Reaching this moment that we have dreamed of makes us very happy… I have seen a great commitment from the players, a great job from the coaching staff and the disposition, character, will, dedication and camaraderie that are essential to achieve these championships” , pointed out Adriana Ramírez Salazar, Basketball Coordinator at the University.

The men’s team defeated Universidad Modelo 91-45 in its first game, then beat Cetys 83-56 and closed the group stage with a win against UACH 83-72. In the quarterfinals, they eliminated UP CDMX 68-59 and did the same against UANL 70-67 in the semis to finally be crowned against Tec Mty 63-53.

For their part, the girls began the Universiade with a 130-14 beating against the Autonomous University of Chiapas, in their second match they defeated Cetys 65-52 and closed the group stage with a 62-57 victory against ULSA Neza. . In the quarterfinals they dispatched Anáhuac Norte 47-38 and in the semifinals Tec GDL 60-54, while they won the championship against UANL 61-56.

Now both teams have a second goal: to achieve the double championship because in two and three weeks they will face the Big Eight Championship. The women will do it in Tijuana (Cetys) and the men in Monterrey (CEU).

“The Big Eight is tougher and that is why we must be more focused, but I am sure that we are going to win the double championship,” said the captain of the UPAEP team, Lizeth Barraza.
