Universiade 2022: Closing glory

Ciudad Juárez was the venue for the 2022 National Universiade, a great sports festival that brought together more than 9,000 athletes and students from public and private universities from all over the country on this border.

The inauguration, at the Benito Juárez Olympic Stadium, will be one of the most memorable moments in the history of this city, since it was a party that included the parade of all the athletes, live music, a drone show, pyrotechnics and the lighting the fire of the cauldron, a universal symbol of sport. The welcoming speeches were given by the rector of the UACJ, Juan Ignacio Camargo Nassar; Cruz Pérez Cuellar, municipal president of Ciudad Juárez; and César Jáuregui Moreno, representing Governor Maru Campos Galván.

In sports, over 24 days the athletes competed in 25 different disciplines, which put all their talent, skill and ability to the test.

The Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) and the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (UACh) obtained the seventh and eighth place in the medal table, respectively. The UACJ with 26 medals, 7 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze. While the UACh 7 gold, 6 silver and 10 bronze to give a total of 23.

A headquarters at the height

The Benito Juárez Olympic Stadium and its recently inaugurated blue athletics track witnessed the speed of the athletes, their resistance to cover long distances; They also showed us how high you can jump, how much momentum you can have to go as far as possible; the strength to throw the javelin, the discus, the hammer or a bullet.

In the different venues used, the competitors amazed with their racket handling in badminton, tennis and table tennis; with agility and reflexes in volleyball; with the skill to know when to throw or pass the ball in handball; with the mental capacity and concentration of chess; with the spectacularity and speed of basketball; with baseball and softball strategy.

The applause and the talent

The audience that cheered from the stands witnessed the physical strength in weightlifting; of the strength and endurance of wrestling and boxing; of teamwork and the union of soccer, rugby and tochito; of the precision and aim of archery; of the aesthetics and coordination of gymnastics; of the mettle and respect of karate, judo and taekwondo; and the elegance of fencing.

It should be noted that in addition to being high-performance athletes, all the participants are students and future professionals, so the discipline they take to combine the academic, sports and personal aspects is also to be applauded.

In memory of

And although there were also moments of pain and sadness, such as the departure of the young judoka David Alejandro Gómez, who died during the competition, and whom his teammates, rivals, coaches and athletes remembered with a well-deserved tribute, since his achievements will live forever. .

Thus, after 24 days of an event that for the first time was held in Ciudad Juárez, the flame of the 2022 National Universiade went out, but the records, legacies and triumphs will always remain in the memory. The athletes do not rest and are already preparing for the next edition in 2023.
