The municipalities of Crabtree and Sainte-Marie-Salomé have made an environmental alliance with the aim of allowing their citizens to recycle expanded polystyrene (styrofoam) and glass.

Crabtree announced the installation of two containers dedicated to the recycling of expanded polystyrene at 51 4th Avenue, near the baseball field and the BMX track. The contents of the bins are collected and recycled by Éco-Captation in Prévost. The polystyrene recycling project is also a first in Lanaudière and few municipalities in Quebec currently offer this service.

As for Sainte-Marie-Salomé, it has been offering its residents the possibility of recycling glass since 2022. It is the company 2M Resources, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, which is responsible for collecting the materials deposited at 690 chemin St-Jean (next to the church).

“We found that it was more effective to work together rather than to duplicate efforts. Now, the citizens of our two municipalities can recycle glass and styrofoam”, enthused the mayor of Crabtree, Mario Lasalle.

For her part, the municipal councilor responsible for the environment in Crabtree, Véronique Payette, says she is very excited about this new collaboration between “neighbors”. “We must stick together to meet the challenge of climate change and this initiative is a step in the right direction. She also hopes that there will be several other joint projects.

This desire is shared by the mayor of Sainte-Marie-Salomé, Véronique Venne. “We have a leadership role to assume as municipalities. With this project, we are going further than what the provincial government recommends in terms of waste management. »

Note that to recover glass containers, the lids must be removed and the containers must be rinsed and sorted according to their color. As for styrofoam, food containers, construction material (insulation) and packing supplies are accepted. What is deposited in the containers must however be clean.
