The San Antonio Spurs approached the 2022 NBA draft with three first-round picks that opened up a wide range of possibilities and profiles to recruit. Ultimately, the Texas franchise used its picks 9, 20, and 25 on Jeremy Sochan, Malaki Branham, and Blake Wesley, respectively.
Although it is true that having so many rounds allowed greater flexibility when choosing players that were easier to adapt to the current project, the Spurs management has shared its great satisfaction with the prospects finally recruited. In fact, in the organization they hope that the components of this trident will become solid contributors in the long term of the team.
“We approach each draft trying to find the best possible talent,” said the general manager of the Spurs, Briang Wright, according to San Antonio Express-News. “We leave this draft behind feeling very satisfied with what we have done. We have chosen three guys who had been projected into the top twenty. As we see now, the teams play smaller and the guys can defend multiple positions and do different things on the court. So we think these guys complement the group very well and are able to connect both ends of the floor.”
Not only that. According to the same outlet, the Spurs could be reluctant to offer Dejounte Murray a contract extension for the maximum now that they have a young core so deep, extensive and versatile. To the guard, 25, has another two years left on his contract at a total of $34 million. Thus, rumors have begun about a possible transfer by Murray now that his cache is very high after having completed a remarkable season and having been selected for the first time to play the All-Star Game.
