The repurchase of Mareo, not discussed in the meeting with the City Council

Orlegi is looking for alliances before his next landing at Sporting. The meeting between Alejandro Irarragorri, president of the board of directors of the Mexican group, and Ana González, mayor of Gijón, yesterday became a contact to address several of the issues involving the club from Gijón and the Consistory. The repurchase of Mareo, a negotiation that had made some progress in recent months, was left untouched during this first meeting. What Orlegi did show interest in is analyzing the projects planned with the CVC funds: the expansion of Mareo, with the creation of a macro-clinic and a residence among its big bets, and the restaurant in El Molinón.

Orlegi will analyze the so-called “sports city of the future”, which will entail the expansion of Mareo after Sporting bought the “La Marruca” estate, land attached to the current red and white facilities. In this way, it would have 270,000 square meters. For these plans, Orlegi has shown interest in studying their execution, which, as Javier Fernández recalled at the shareholders’ meeting, is conditioned “to the development of the special plan that we make”. An aspect of which the Consistory is aware.

The expansion plan for Mareo developed by the still president of Sporting includes building two new natural grass pitches, a covered pavilion with two futsal courts, a residence for players and, as one of its most ambitious commitments, a macro-clinic, as as LA NUEVA ESPAÑA anticipated. Another of the projects advanced by this newspaper was the creation of a restaurant in the northwest area of El Molinón, another point of interest for the Mexican group, with experience in this type of activity.

Sporting will receive 28 million euros through the CVC, the distribution of which was explained by Javier Fernández at the shareholders’ meeting, indicating how it will be divided into each of the sections contemplated by the agreement with the fund and LaLiga. 15% will be allocated to debt payment, “in our case to alleviate part of the effects of covid”; another 15%, for the registration of players and the remaining 70%, “to the strategic growth of the entity”. This last section includes the improvements in El Molinón and Mareo. Regarding the uses of the Gijon municipal and the rojiblanca school, the local government indicated at the meeting that it plans to maintain the same conditions applied until now: concession for the first, until 2046 and rent for the second, until 2026.
