the Palermo club soon to be bought by the owner of Manchester City?

According to several Italian and British media, the City Football Group, owner of Manchester City among others, is considering buying the Palermo club in Italy, promoted to the 2nd division.

The City Football Group (CFG), already owner of a dozen clubs including Manchester City, wants to take control of Palermo FC, which has just won its accession to Serie B (2nd division), according to several Italian media.

“The negotiations for the sale of Palermo to the City Football Group are progressing rapidly”wrote thus on Thursday the Gazzetta dello Sportwhereas Sky Sport estimate that “the transaction could be concluded in the coming days”.

The president of the Sicilian club Dario Mirri could retain a minority share in this takeover project discussed for several months. This entrepreneur was part of a group of investors who took over the club in 2019 after it went bankrupt and was demoted to the 4th division, at amateur level.

The club, requested by AFP, did not react.

Palermo, a club that played in Serie A until 2017 and where Javier Pastore, Edinson Cavani and Paulo Dybala notably played, moved up to Serie C (3rd division) in 2020. And it has just conquered its accession to Serie B by winning barrages against Padua.

The CFG, an Emirati fund, already has total or partial control of eleven clubs, according to its site, including Manchester City, its flagship, but also Troyes in France, Girona in Spain, Lommel in Belgium but also New York City FC in the United States, Melbourne City in Australia, Yokohama Marinos in Japan or Sichuan Jiuniu in China.
