Eduardo Derbez-Torresa young golfer made history by becoming the first Mexican player to win the Western Junior Championship. The pageant was held June 20-23 at the Naperville Country Club.

The Mexican managed to deliver cards 66-71-69 during the first three days of the competition. However, he fell into irregularity in the final round where he recorded four birdies, one bogey and two double bogeys to get a 74 (+2).
Previously, Eduardo Derbez-Torres got the lowest score in the National Interzone Championship “Lorena Ochoa” in the men’s category of 18 and under. This time he managed to tie the American Camden Smithwith a cumulative score of 280 hits, 8 under par.
“The last time I played a playoff was in Puebla, I played very calmly and I won it. She had a good memory of that time and she knew that this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up”, declared the Monterrey native about his confidence going to the playoff hole. The victory gave him a extension for the Western Amateur.
It should be noted that the Western Junior Championshipconquered by the Mexican, is the oldest youth golf tournament in the United States and is a competition where sports figures such as: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler; and veterans like Fred Couples, Craig Stadler, Corey Pavin y Jim Furyk.
