How do you compete in judo?
The fights, for both men and women, last four minutes and take place on a Tatami, which is a mat with a soft surface that cushions blows and heavy falls, in a competition area of 10 by 10 meters.
There, two athletes dressed in judogi (uniform or kimono) blue or white, they will face each other after hearing the voice of Hajime (start) of the referee in search of the ippon, maximum score that grants immediate victory to the judoka who executes a throwing technique with which his opponent falls flat on his back; that by means of a technique of strangulation or dislocation of the elbow gets it to surrender, or that it executes a Osae Komi (immobilization) for 20 seconds.
However, the athlete can also win the match by Waza-Ari, which is equivalent to half a point and is obtained if you make a throw that does not meet the requirements to be Ippon, or if you manage to immobilize your opponent for 10 seconds. Two waza-ari equals one ‘Ippon’.
In combat, the judge will say Matte (stop) whenever time should stop, Toketa when an immobilization has been interrupted, and may impose Shidos (faults) as a warning to a competitor. Although these do not award points on the scoreboard, the accumulation of three translates into a Hansoku Make (disqualification) for whoever receives it and therefore, in an Ippon for the opponent.
Hansoku make is also declared directly when a serious offense is committed, such as throwing directly over the head, committing unsportsmanlike conduct, among others.
If at the end of the match there is a tie, regardless of the shidos, it goes to golden point or overtime, where the first judoka to score a point will win. The referee will say Sore Made (end of time) to end the match and designate the winner.
The judo competitions at the Valledupar 2022 Bolivarian Games will take place from June 25 to 28 at the Coliseo Colegio Bilingüe Valledupar, a stage where the 15 medals awarded by this sport will be disputed, distributed in 7 gold for the categories of the male branches, 7 female (both individual) and a team medal (mixed).
