The joint Olympic bid for 2030, getting closer to the “requiem”

BarcelonaLes converses entre el Comitè Olímpic Espanyol, el govern català i l’aragonès continuen per intentar salvar la candidatura olímpica per portar uns Jocs Olímpics d’Hivern al Pirineu l’any 2030. El govern català segueix decidit a lluitar per aquesta proposta, però cada once again, he is betting on doing it alone if the COE allows it, as the candidacies cannot be presented by political actors. They are presented by the Olympic committees.

And the COE prioritizes a joint candidacy between Catalonia and Aragon, although the president of the COE, Alejandro Blanco, does not hide that he is quite the type of the Aragonese president, Javier Lambán. Today, Lambán admitted that he was “anything but optimistic” about the future of the joint candidacy of Catalonia and Aragon to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, but also assured that his government would be “the last “to get up from the negotiating table and not be the one to say” the requiem “.

Blanco accuses Lambán of using the candidacy to win votes and do politics by projecting an image of a tough negotiator who does not give a shit about Catalonia. But Blanco himself reminded Lambán that the Catalan government had behaved in an “impeccable” manner during all the negotiations to distribute the seats of the candidacy. For months, a table with representatives of the two governments and the COE negotiated and agreed on how the sports would be distributed. And when all present agreed Javier Lambán decided at the last minute not to sign. “I remind Lambán that the meetings were recorded with everyone’s consent and there you can see how the negotiations went,” said Blanco, who was kind of watching the twists and turns of a Lambán who accused him. to work under the orders of Catalonia and has hinted that he should resign.

Catalonia does not want to wait until 2034

Blanco has tried to gain time to save an increasingly complicated candidacy, as the International Olympic Committee is already visiting other possible locations, such as Sapporo (Japan), while there is no agreement here. He hinted that the candidacy could be postponed until 2034, an idea that Catalonia rejects and that could respond to the desire to gain time to see what happens in the next regional elections in Aragon. Blanco has admitted that the most likely solution, if an agreement between Catalonia and Aragon is not closed soon, would be for the two governments to present, if they so wish, solo candidacies. And the COE would decide which of the two to defend internationally. The Catalan government, which has been ready for a proposal in this regard for years, likes this option, which Blanco wants to leave as a last resort.

This week the Aragonese government has desperately tried a new proposal to divide the sports, which divides the tests into four lots with two options each, alpine skiing by genre, with the provision of the Aragonese government that the Generalitat choose first the one you prefer from each batch. The COE, however, is not in favor of separating sports such as alpine skiing by genre. And Catalonia only has two options: an agreement similar to the one already agreed months ago, in which all alpine skiing would be in La Molina, or go alone. This week’s talks are not coming to fruition at the moment.
