The flag bearers of Paraguay for the Bolivarian Games

The rowers Alejandra Alonso and Javier Insfrán are the flag bearers of the delegation of 165 athletes from Paraguay in the XIX Bolivarian Games, which will be held from next Friday in the Colombian city of Valledupar.

The Guarani representatives will compete in 20 disciplines and will seek to surpass the mark of 30 medals reached in 2017, when these games were played in the Colombian town of Santa Marta.

Alonso, 25, managed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, where he placed 21st.

He achieved bronze and silver medals at the South American Junior and Senior Rowing Championships that took place in December last year in Asunción.

He repeated the silver and won gold at the Latin American Rowing Pre-Olympic, held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) between March 4 and 6 last year.

The other Paraguayan flag bearer is 22-year-old Javier Insfran. On his palm trees stand out gold medals at the Pan American Games Junior Cali 2021 and at the South American Youth and Senior Rowing Championships in Asuncion, the same year.

In addition, he took tenth place in the U23 World Rowing Championship, which was held in the Czech Republic.

He also obtained silver and gold in the 2021 Latin American Rowing Olympic Pre-Olympic.

During the farewell ceremony for the local competitors, which took place on Sunday, the Paraguayan Sports Minister, Diego Galeano, wished for an “excellent participation” in Valledupar.

And he trusted that the result of the fair in Colombia will fill the Paraguayan representatives “even more with enthusiasm for what Asu 2022 is going to be”, alluding to the South American Games that the Paraguayan capital will host between October 1 and 15. of this year.

Paraguay will compete this time in swimming, athletics, cycling, handball, boxing, fencing, soccer (men’s and women’s), indoor soccer, gymnastics, judo, karate, weightlifting, wrestling, figure skating and speed skating, rowing, rugby, squash, table tennis, sailing and beach volleyball.

At the 2017 Santa Marta Games, the Guaraní delegation, made up of 147 athletes at the time, won 7 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals.
