The “Comets” of the Baseball Club of Honfleur: Champions of Normandy!

@Honfleurinfos: The Comets champions of Normandy

After an unexpected turnaround, the Comets of the Baseball Club of Honfleur are crowned champions of Normandy in Regional 1. A new title after that of 2020.

As indicated in a previous article, the title was played this season on points, and therefore on the standings, without a final tournament. The Comets won their last two games of the season by forfeit from Le Havre, on Sunday June 12. Despite this, they remained second in the standings and had to wait for a misstep from their competitor Saint-Lô to be able to hope for something. The Jimmer’s of Saint-Lô will then lose a match in their last double confrontation against Louviers, this Sunday, June 19. After winning the first match 5-4, they lost 12-6 in the second. The Jimmer’s and the Comets then finished neck and neck, with both 14 wins and 2 losses, or 0.875 percent of wins. A status quo that benefits the people of Honfleur thanks to a favorable TQB (Team’s Quality Balance) on their direct confrontations!

The reactions
The Comets then finished first in the championship and won the title of Normandy champions 2022. We are super happy, it was really the objective of the season ” reacts Youssef Chiabri, coach of the Comets, already present during the coronation two years ago. A title that opens the doors to Division 3, the third level of French baseball. After this regular season, the D3 constitutes the Playoffs. It brings together all the regional champions, France is then ‘cut’ into four, forming four pools of three teams. At the end of the three grids to be made, a final takes place between the four outgoing teams of these pools to compete for the rise in National. For Youssef, this D3 is a kind of bonus in the season: “ the goal is achieved, that was the title. We wanted to access this D3 and face other regional champions, the best teams in France. I don’t really have a fixed objective for this competition, we already wanted to take part in it, but we will go determined ».
The Comets will go there with the same team as during the regular season, or even a reinforced team with the return of Antonin Jeanblanc, currently studying medicine in Caen, and who should be available at the start of the school year. But despite all this, the objective will not be to reach the National level, ” because unfortunately the club does not have the budget to be able to ensure travel at the national level. We are also open to all companies that would like to sponsor us and give us a hand. explains Youssef Chiabri. A problem that is regularly found among small amateur clubs, and which also arose for the Honfleur rugby club RACH. The Honfleur Comets will therefore go to Division 3 completely free of any pressure to face the best teams from neighboring regions. A big congratulations to them for their second title of champions of Normandy in three years!
