The COE definitively rules out the candidacy for the 2030 Winter Games

Barcelona / MadridThe joint candidacy of Catalonia and Aragon for the 2030 Winter Olympics has finally derailed. The Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) plans to make the official announcement in the next few hours, after officially announcing it to the political authorities. As ARA said a week ago, the project was against the ropes and would not accept, at least now, an exclusively Catalan candidacy, although the COE is clear who is responsible for this failure: the president of Aragon, Javier Lambán, who is accused of boycotting the candidacy for “anti-Catalanism” and “electoral interests”. However, they hope that the work done so far will serve to present another candidate for 2034 who, this time, will be the winner.

The uneasiness with Lambán of all the agents involved in the candidacy is monumental, as the technicians appointed by Aragon were the ones who, at the meeting held on December 21, 2021, made the proposal to share the tests between both territories, and it was precisely Catalonia that voted against it. The proposal was approved and the Generalitat said that despite its negative vote from that moment on, it would defend the candidacy. However, Lambán later changed his mind and refused to support the agreement and called for changes to increase the weight of Aragon in the tests. From the COE, however, it is considered that the decision of the Aragonese president was of a political nature and that it would have been useless to make concessions. “If we had given him a ski descent then he would have wanted something else. He himself has admitted that he did not want to run with the Catalans, that is the only reason,” they say. “Besides, I already had evidence in all three valleys, which was what I wanted at first,” they conclude.

From the body chaired by Alejandro Blanco, they are optimistic about 2034 because they consider that Catalonia has left a very good image in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and open the door for this candidacy to be piloted basically by the Generalitat, with ways to explore possible collaborations even with Andorra. They also point out that the decision on these games will still be made by the current team at the IOC, which already looked favorably on 2030. as this means changing the project and assuming that the other has failed, and in these conditions it is impossible for the IOC to approve it.

Position of Sanchez and Iceta

The Olympic candidacy that has been worked on in recent months was seen by the COE as a project “technically improvable” in relation to other proposals interested in hosting the 2030 Games, but unbeatable in terms of territorial regeneration and “politics “sports approach” in Catalonia that is to be established by the State. Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online. moment they left the negotiation in the hands of the COE. They do regret that neither the most affected territory, Huesca, nor the economic sectors of the community and also politicians, in reference to the Aragonese PP, have not had enough strength to rectify Lambán. The Huesca Provincial Council even proposed to the COE to set aside the regional government in the negotiations, which was unfeasible.
