The candidacy of Lalo Arantegui bursts into force in the election of the sporting director of Oviedo

Oviedo continues with the search for the successor of Ruben Reyes to assume the sports management of the club and in the casting has burst into force Lalo Aranteguiex Huesca and Zaragoza.

The first candidate who met the requirements was Chema Aragón, but his current relationship with Mirandés, with an “unaffordable” termination clause of one million euros, has entrenched the situation in such a way that it is already considered impossible. For this reason, the blue directive has begun to consider other candidates. And Lalo Arantegui has appeared, the former sports director of Huesca and Zaragoza and without a team since December 2020.

There are conversations between the parties and it is one of the candidacies that has the most support in the Carbayona entity that, as has happened in previous selection processes, keeps several avenues open. Lalo, a profile very different from that of Chema Aragón, used to dealing with the demands of a club with a large social mass behind – he did it at Zaragoza – has a privileged position in the casting. There is harmony on both sides and it is the main option at the moment. Tito Blanco and Toni Cruz also remain possibilities because the process remains open.

The special way of proceeding in the blue club means that the different men with strength in the entity have their favorite for the position.

Only Chema Aragón seemed to have the support of all the agents involved. Both the board of directors chaired by Jorge Menéndez Vallina and Federico González, Carso’s adviser, had given the go-ahead to the Valladolid native. However, the unalterable position of Mirandés, who was not willing to let the Valladolid player out, activated the search for alternatives.

Now, Lalo seems to have the largest number of supports, although other candidates with whom he has dealt in recent days are not ruled out. This is the case of Toni Cruz, 9 years of experience in the technical secretariat and sports management at Las Palmas, and Tito Blanco, who has worked at Alavés in recent times. From Asturias, various profiles are being considered, candidates who match the idea that the club manages. In any case, the final decision depends on Mexico, with Arturo Elías pending each movement to give the go-ahead or suggest that the focus be focused on other alternatives. In the last hours the maximum shareholder of the entity maintained a lot of contact with the leaders of the club.

Lalo Arantegui, 44, was a footballer with a long career in Second B teams and a brief presence in Second with Huesca. In the Aragonese Ejea he went on to work in the technical secretariat, making the leap to the offices to fulfill a promising career. After that experience, he joined the technical secretariat of Zaragoza and was later signed to the Villarreal sports management, for scouting work, between 2013 and 2016. His step to the fore was at Huesca, in 2015/16 and he remained until February 2017, when he went on to hold the same position at Zaragoza. In December 2020 he was relieved of his position.

Since then, he has remained out of the day-to-day life of the clubs, but not far from the world. In March 2021 he was appointed director of new projects by the Promosport representation agency, with functions such as coordinating the scouting and analysis areas of different markets. Therefore, despite not occupying the sports management for a year and a half, he has continued to deal with the monitoring and search for soccer players.

First step in planning

The appointment of the sports director is the initial step in Oviedo’s project for the 2022/23 season. After the departure of Rubén Reyes, the club hopes to find the ideal replacement before making other important decisions, such as the continuity or not of José Ángel Ziganda as coach. It would be his fourth year in the blue team.

The new member of the sports management will have at least a base on which to work as soon as he signs his contract. Oviedo currently has 15 players under contract: Tomeu Nadal, Lucas Ahijada, David Costas, Dani Calvo, Tarín, Pierre Cornud, Jimmy, Javi Mier, Luismi, Viti, Jirka, Sangalli, Hugo Rama, Borja Bastón and Samu Obeng. .

In addition, Oviedo has signed goalkeeper Quentin Braat, from the French Second Division: he was the last signing of Rubén Reyes before leaving the Carbayona entity to sign for Getafe. And the hope remains of being able to renew Borja Sánchez and Joan Femenías, who will end their relationship on June 30.
