The Bilbao time trial will be the starting point for the elite traineras

It will take place on July 2, with departure and arrival in front of the City Hall, and will recover the ‘Fan Zone’ after two years of absence due to the pandemic

The Bilbao Flag, the only time trial on the First Division calendar, will once again kick off the Eusko Label and Euskotren leagues after two years in which it has not been the case for different reasons. The appointment, which was officially presented this Thursday, will take place on July 2, starting at 5:40 p.m., with the tide rising. The start and finish line will be located in front of the City Hall of the Biscayan capital, while the ciabogas beacon will be located at the height of Deusto.

“We are proud that this top-level competition starts in the waters of the estuary and we encourage people to come and enjoy one of our sports with the most tradition, history and identity,” said the Councilor for Youth and Sports of Bilbao, Itxaso Erroteta. The Association of Traineras Clubs -ACT-, organizer of both the men’s and women’s arraunlari First Division, also expressed its “satisfaction” at the fact of starting “such a special edition as the twentieth of the Eusko Label League in a field of regattas such as Bilbao for its spectacular nature as it passes through some of the most emblematic buildings in the town”, stressed the secretary of the ACT, Pedro Olmedillo.

One of the novelties, after two seasons of absence from regattas due to the pandemic, will be the return of the ‘Fan Zone’ to competition. And Bilbao will also be the revival of it for the followers of the different teams. “We have recovered that space dedicated to fans, which gives us a lot of color in the regattas,” Olmedillo stressed. The time trial will start at 5:40 p.m. with the Euskotren Women’s League dispute. The four boats in contention -next season there will be eight- will start at intervals of one minute in this order: Tolosaldea, Donostiarra, Orio and Arraun Lagunak. A priori, according to what happened during the preseason and in the Gipuzkoa Championship held in the middle of the month, the fight between ‘eaglets’ and Arraun Lagunak -winner of the league and Concha last season- promises strong emotions.

according to classification

With regard to the men’s Eusko Label League, the twelve boats in contention have been framed in three batches according to the classification obtained last season. In the first series, Kaiku – second in the promotion play-off last summer -, Getaria, Lekittarra and Ares will row in this order. Once this quartet concludes, Cabo Cruz, Ondarroa, Urdaibai and Zierbena will go on stage. Donostiarra, Orio, Hondarribia and Santurtzi, league champion and Concha in 2021 but who have undergone a profound reconversion and part with much more modest objectives, will be the ones to close the day. There are nine days left to put the oars into action.
