Eugenie Bouchard has not played a game since March 2021. The former top 5 player was suffering from a shoulder injury. At Wimbledon she should have made her comeback. However, she voluntarily does without it – for tactical reasons.
“I have decided to withdraw from Wimbledon because of the WTA decision not to award ranking points,” Bouchard wrote on Twitter. Because of the British organizers’ decision to exclude the Russian and Belarusian tennis stars, the WTA and ATP decided not to award points at Wimbledon. A decision that caused a stir.
«Use protected ranking? Makes no sense”
The Canadian explains her decision with the limited participation by means of a protected ranking. “As much as I love Wimbledon and it saddens me to miss it – using my protected ranking in a tournament where there are no points makes no sense.”
This rule can only be used in two Grand Slam tournaments. And the 28-year-old wants to use her at the US Open and Australian Open. Bouchard: «I have to choose wisely.» At the end of the summer she wants to get back into action.
Naomi Osaka (24) also cancels for the lawn major. The Japanese was already plagued by problems with her Achilles tendon in Roland Garros. “My Achilles tendon is still out, see you next time,” she wrote on Twitter. (smi)
