Ian Happ and Patrick Wisdom hit two-run homers early in the game as Alfonso Rivas added a late-game grand slam and the Chicago Cubs routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-5 on Wednesday.

Held to a two-run total in the first two games of the series, Chicago broke out with seven runs in the second inning.

The Cubs loaded the bases and Jared Eickhoff (0-1) then hit Rivas with a pitch. Rafael Ortega doubled to score a deuce and Patrick Wisdom drove in two more with a single.

Happ sent a fastball into the shrubbery over the fence. The Pittsburgh native continued his hellish June, batting now at .380 with eight RBIs and three homers.

Wisdom homered almost in the same spot in the stadium in the fourth.

Eickhoff made his debut this season and allowed ten runs on ten hits in 4.1 innings. He became the first Pirates pitcher to allow ten runs in his first outing with the team. He had also given up ten points in his first start with the New York Mets in 2021.

Chicago starter Keegan Thompson (7-2) worked six innings and allowed four hits. He struck out seven batters and allowed a run, a Diego Castillo solo homer in second.

Castillo went from second base to the mound to kick off the ninth inning for Pittsburgh. He loaded the bases with two walks before Rivas hit his 65mph shot for his first career grand slam.
