Sai Praneeth, who hasn’t had much of a touch this year, faces sixth seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the first round on Tuesday. Praneeth has appeared in six tournaments this year and has faced humiliating first-round defeats in five tournaments. His best performance so far is reaching the second round at the Orleans Masters.

Meanwhile, World No.6 Ginting enters the contest after reaching the quarterfinals at the Indonesi Open. She is yet to win a title this year and her best performances so far this year are two semi-final appearances at the Swiss Open and the Indonesian Masters.

Sameer Verma versus Jonatan Christie

Sameer Verma has been struggling with injuries this year which have seen him drop a bit as he has been inconsistent thus far. He started the year with a second round exit at the Indian Open and then withdrew from the first round at the Syed Modi International as well as the All England Championships. His best performance is reaching the quarterfinals at the Swiss Open. He begins his campaign at the Malaysian Open facing seventh seed Jonathan Christie.

Christie is in good form having won the Swiss Open title this year. He also finished as the runner-up in the Asian Championships after losing the final against Lee Zii Jia. He enters the Malaysian Open after facing the exit of the second round at the Indonesian Open.

This will be the fourth meeting between both players and Sameer leads the head-to-head record 2-1. They last met four years ago at the French Open with Christie recording a three-set win.

HS Prannoy contra Liew Daren

HS Prannoy from India leads the men’s field in the tournament after the withdrawals of Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth. He begins his campaign by facing Malaysia’s Liew Daren in the first round. Prannoy is a fit man at the moment, having finished as runner-up at the Swiss Open this year. He too played a clinical role in helping India win the Thomas Cup and was recently the only Indian to reach the semi-finals at the Indonesian Open.

The duo will meet for the 11th time in their careers with Prannoy leading the Head-to-Head record 6-4. They last met this year at the Thailand Open with Daren winning the first round contest in straight sets.

In the men’s doubles, India’s seventh seed Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be in action. They will face Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun from Malaysia in the first round. The Indian duo are expected to be the favourites.

India’s women’s doubles pair Ashwini Ponappa and N Sikki Reddy will start the campaign by taking on sixth-seeded Japanese Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida in the first round. Meanwhile, Haritha Harinarayanan and Ashna Roy will face off against Jeong Na-eun and Kim Hye-jeong.
