After a two-year shortened program due to the global pandemic, the 2022 Rolex Giraglia returned to Saint-Tropez as the venue for the three-day coastal series and the starting point for the main event, the historic ocean race that gives the event its name. . An impressive fleet of 141 boats left the beautiful port of the French Côte d’Azur on Wednesday, June 15, heading for the Italian city of Genoa. Once again, the Rolex Giraglia fulfilled the commitment to unite France and Italy with which it was founded in 1953.

Before the start, the forecast of light winds led the Race Committee to shorten the usual route of 241 miles (446 km) by about 35 nautical miles (about 65 km).

A decision that would allow the majority of the fleet to have more opportunities to finish the race before the deadline on Saturday morning. In the spirit that has always defined the Rolex Giraglia, the professional and amateur crews demonstrated their ability to rise to the challenge. 105 boats were going to complete the course on time.

Lisa R, overall winner

The final victory went to Giovanni di Vincenzo’s Ker 46 Lisa R, the first Italian shipowner to win the regatta since 2008. It was the victory of a non-professional crew that has spent nearly 15 years sailing, evolving and improving together, testimony to the enormous power of the teamwork that was recognized by all its rivals at the awards ceremony held at the headquarters of the Italian Yacht Club, in Genoa.

Francesco Bertone, skipper of the Lisa R, wanted to highlight that the regatta tested the skill and effort capacity of the entire crew: “It was a regatta with little wind and very hard. In many situations, being a mile to the left or to the right was the difference between winning or losing. It was a full-time effort, the crew had to pay attention to wind direction and changes at all times. Winning on comp time is a dream come true. We were close last year, and we came back to finish the job.”
