Rebecca Marino is not making friends in Britain

Canada’s Rebecca Marino upset some fans of Britain’s Heather Watson on Monday, winning 7-6(1), 6-4 over the local player in a first-round match at the Eastbourne Tennis Tournament.

Ranked 107th in the world, the winner needed 1h 41min to overcome the holder of the 120th place. She had a good day on serve, slamming seven aces and pocketing 30 of 33 points contested when she had first serves. Marino saved the two break points she had to defend and broke three in seven chances.

The two athletes were in their first duel since the quarterfinals of the Coupe Banque Nationale de Québec in 2018. In the next round, the British Columbian will have the heavy task of overcoming the Italian Camila Giorgi, 26th racket in the world having received a bye in the second round.
