PSSI Will Appoint STY Substitute to Train the Indonesian National Team

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Chairman PSSI Mochamad Iriawan said that his party plans to withdraw the position of coach Indonesian National team and U-23 from Shin Tae Yong and will hand it over to another trainer.

PSSI plans to focus on South Korean tactician Shin Tae Yong to train the U-20 Indonesian national team and no longer handle the senior and U-23 national teams.

This was conveyed by Iriawan at the Kemenpora Building, Jakarta, Tuesday (7/6). Iriawan said that PSSI had considered this policy because he saw Shin having difficulty training the U-20, U-23, and senior national teams at once.

“In my opinion, now he is stuck with the three age groups. So we will recommend that Shin only hold the national team for the U-20 World Cup,” said the man who is familiarly called Iwan Bule, quoted from Antara.

However, Iriawan emphasized that PSSI would still ask for Shin Tae Yong’s willingness before formalizing the plan.

PSSI gave Shin time to complete the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification in Kuwait with the Indonesian national team before discussing his new assignment.

“We are waiting for Shin to return from Kuwait. After that, we will discuss it,” said Iriawan.

Iriawan said that if Shin Tae Yong agreed with PSSI’s wishes, the U-23 and senior national teams would be handled by a new coach.

“So later the U-23 and senior national teams will be handed over to others,” said Iriawan.

Shin Tae Yong was appointed coach of the Indonesian national team in December 2019. He is contracted until 2023 with the main target of preparing the U-20 national team for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

However, in the process Shin handled the senior national team and U-23. While the U-16 national team is fully trained by the Milky Way with supervision from Shin.

At the senior national team level, Shin brought Indonesia to be the runner-up of the AFF Cup 2020 and passed the “Garuda” squad to the third or final round of the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification.

Then, with the U-23 national team, Shin led his squad to get a bronze medal in the 2021 SEA Games men’s football.
