Austria’s only NBA player Jakob Pöltl is currently on home leave. The Viennese uses the free time to relax, to prepare for the national team but also to continue to work on himself individually, because the goals are set high.
It’s hot, really hot. Not only in the sun but also in the hall of the DC Timberwolves in Bernoullistraße. At sauna-like temperatures, Jakob Pöltl works tirelessly on his individual skills. The main focus of the training plan is strength training, but the center of the San Antonio Spurs also wants to work more on offensive skills this summer. “We’ve been working a lot on ball handling, different throws and free throws lately to take another step forward here to be able to play a bigger role in the team on offense with more responsibility.”
Pöltl about his training in Vienna
The goals that Pöltl has with the Spurs are already clearly defined “clearly playoffs or play-in”. In the past three years, the Texans have never progressed beyond the NBA Play-In Tournament. Spurs last played in the 2018-2019 season. Jakob Pöltl has a contract with San Antonio until 2023, but of course the dream of the ring still exists.
“Goal to at least reach the play-in again”
Whether the championship goal can be achieved with the Spurs in the next few years is anyone’s guess, but the right moves on the trade market are also needed for this. But the Wiener Center could also be part of such a package, because the services certainly did not go unnoticed. In his sixth overall season in the NBA, he made a decent step forward, rising to become a top performer and undisputed starter with the Spurs. He played 68 games for Spurs and averaged 13.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Pöltl on a possible trade
Jakob Pöltl is currently the only Austrian in the best basketball league in the world, but with Luka Brajkovic a second Austrian has been named for the draft (06/23). Will he make the cut?
Pöltl on Brajkovic: “I know how tough it is”
But before Jakob Pöltl goes back to America, the Austrian national team is still on the program. For the center it is the first assignment for Austria in four years. “I’m really looking forward to the national team, I’ve already met a few players in Vienna, which has aroused the anticipation even more.” For a long time it was unclear whether the insurance for the NBA player could be lifted, but for Pöltl it was never an issue a burden “I approached it with the attitude that it would work out”. At the end of the first round of pre-qualification for the 2025 finals, the ÖBV men will meet Ireland (June 30) and Cyprus (July 3) in Salzburg.
“I’m looking forward to the national team”
After the national team, Pöltl is going back to the USA. Until then, he will continue to work on himself in order to fulfill his big dream – a title in the NBA. Even with sauna-like temperatures in Vienna.
