Moya: ‘The Grand Slam goal is realistic’ for Nadal

Rafael Nadal began his short preparation for Wimbledon on Wednesday by beating Stan Wawrinka in Hurlingham’s exhibition. Less than a week before the start of the third Grand Slam of the year, the Spaniard does not intend to lift his foot, not even the left, which seems to be doing as well as possible. Even at 36, Nadal manages to innovate: for the first time in his career, he is on the London lawn with the first two major crowns of the season. In front of him, two mythical words: Grand Slam.
To reach this Holy Grail on which everyone has stumbled for 53 years now, he still has to win Wimbledon and the US Open. The first step does not appear to be the easiest on paper, the Mallorcan having not triumphed at the All England Club since 2010. But after all, he had not won in Melbourne since 2009 and that did not prevented from going all the way last winter. Anyway, nothing is ever impossible for him.

Kyrgios opposes coaching: ‘Having to do it alone is the beauty of tennis

Last year, Novak Djokovic came very, very close, winning the first three Majors before stalling in the final in New York against Daniil Medvedev. It was already the first time since Laver in 1969 that a champion won the first three tricks on the calendar. Can Nadal really go all the way? “It’s a realistic goalCarlos Moya told Eurosport on Wednesday. It is the first time in his career that he is in a position to do so, but we still see it as something far away. We’re still only halfway there.”

At Wimbledon, more than anywhere else, there can be surprises

Possible, therefore, but for the coach of the man with 22 titles, it is far from being an obsession for the Nadal clan at this stage. “For the moment, this does not prevent us from sleepingsourit Moya. As a team, there are certain things that keep us awake but the Grand Slam is not one of them yet. We have to take it step by step, it’s not something we talk about among ourselves, it’s not necessarily the priority objective, even if no one dismisses ite.”

The former world number one is in any case confident before Wimbledon. According to him, Rafael Nadal had “a very good training week in Mallorca“, even if it is appropriate that “the grass there is a little different from London“His first outing against Wawrinka was important according to his coach. The Spaniard still has one more exhibition encounter before the serious stuff at Wimbledon.”The important thing for Rafa is to spend as much time as possible on the court now“, he judges.

During his last two participations (2018 and 2019 since the tournament was canceled in 2020 and he was absent last year), Nadal had reached the semi-finals before coming up against Novak Djokovic then Roger Federer. But he will be on his guard well before the final straight. “At Wimbledon, more than anywhere else, there can be surprisesrecalls Carlos Moya. From the first rounds, you can find yourself against a big hitter who can be dangerous.” But he has no fear about the potential of his foal: “My confidence is very high before Wimbledon. He has everything to play well on grass.
