MLB: Sergio Romo would have an agreement with the Blue Jays

Toronto Canada /

Days after being released by the Seattle Mariners, the Mexican reliever Sergio Romo would have an agreement with Toronto Blue Jays to continue his career of 15 seasons in the Major League Baseball (MLB).

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Romo would have reached an agreement with the Blue Jays, a team that has dealt with several injuries to its supporting arms recently. Among those injured are Yimi Garcia, Julian Merryweather, Trevor Richards, Tayler Saucedo and Andrew Vasquez, who had combined for 90 appearances so far this season.

Romo, 39, had a rough stint with the Mariners before being designated for assignment. He only allowed one run in his first eight games, however, a five-run catastrophe at the beginning of June raised his ERA and four runs in his last two appearances ended up dooming his relationship with the Mariners with an ERA of 8.16.

After being released by Seattle, the fate of ‘El Mechón’ seemed to be headed for the Mexican Baseball League with the Acereros de Monclova, a club that has its return rights and with which he reported to the preseason before re-sign in the Major Leagues.

This will be the eighth team Romo has played for in the MLB, the seventh since leaving the San Francisco Giants after the 2016 season.

He won three World Series rings with San Francisco in 2010, 2012 and 2014; he got the championship out in the second of those three titles against the Detroit Tigers.

‘El Mechón’ will find great company on the Blue Jays roster with Tijuana catcher Alejandro Kirk, with whom he will eventually drum.
